First Ebay-bought Abu!

7 08 2009

I bought my first reel from Ebay today, an Abu 6500CS Rocket, converted to CT cage. Buying price was £31 including postage. A combination of the description, and the buying price, show that the reel is not exactly going to be a masterpiece when it gets here! The description mentions chafage on the side plates etc but states “good working order” so I’m expecting a functional, if not pretty, reel. Hope the seller doesn’t mind me putting up a picture of the Ebay listing!

I still have my eyes on two other reels, which pretty much look like bargains (will disclose the model once I decide whether to buy or not), but was gutted to miss out on an auction for two CT-converted Abu’s, one a 6000 and the other a 6500. Again, not great condition, but working and potential for fixing up.

Apart from that, the 650+ I talked about in my previous post has been re-listed. This is, however, a similar price to the above mentioned reels which are more desirable, so I’m holding off for a while to think it over properly. Considering visiting some car boots again tomorrow, and will hopefully have a mid-day fishing session Sunday (although Saturday night will be my first clubbing session in 6 weeks – I’m envisioning a cheap night out, but a *slight* hangover on Sunday ;-)). We’ll see!

Abu Garcia Reel Oil

Finally took delivery of the reel maintenance oil I ordered online a few weeks ago from Angling Direct.. it took so long to turn up that I’d bought some rocket oil on my last visit to the fishing shop and used that to service my reels, but as there are only 4ml in each tube I guess having two’s not a bad thing.

It contains two tubes, one “reel oil” which looks like the one you get with new Abu’s (certainly with multipliers anyway), and a tube of “reel lube”. I assumed this would be grease, but will be interesting to find out what it actually is.. maybe a heavier weight oil. Cost was about £10 including postage.

I’m a keen mountain biker, and I’m doing the “South Downs Way Randonnee” on Saturday, which involves riding 100 miles off-road, over the South Downs, for the British Heart Foundation. This usually takes me 14+ hours, so am knackered by the end of it – no fishing for me on Saturday then ; (

I’ll be more likely to get out on Monday, when I have a day off (recovery from the bike ride!) – according to the BBC there’s a 6.5 metre tide, at about 15:00 – perfect!

On a different note, I can’t believe that although this blog is only two days, the content has already been stolen by another site, probably a content harvester. It hasn’t copied the images as well though, which makes it look a bit strange considering the text talks about them! Thieving gits.

Multiplier service / Fishing gear tidy up

21 07 2009

Bought some new Rocket Oil for my Abu Elites on Saturday, and gave them a partial strip down, oiling the bearings etc. Despite being 10+ years old, they are still behaving impeccably, and still looking beautiful too. Genuine marvels of engineering, can’t wait to get out and have a few casts with em. Decided to visit a few boot fairs to see if I can get hold of some vintage tackle, especially some older Abu multipliers. Not sure what I’ll do with them, I’ll decide that when I actually get some!

Also spent an hour or so digging out the loose terminal tackle from my fishing bag, drying it all and bagging it up. I’m thinking a new tackle box may be in order!
